Research Profile
The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany. Its broad disciplinary spectrum makes it possible to address key scientific and societal questions through inter- and transdisciplinary collaborative research at an internationally leading level. In this context, close cooperation within the dynamic Rhineland cooperation area —with its strong partner universities in Bonn, Aachen, and Düsseldorf, as well as numerous non-university research institutions—is just as important as the wide range of collaborations with international research institutions.
The research profile of the University of Cologne combines three dynamic elements that foster excellence and renewal.
Independent Researchers: Professors and group leaders (R3–R4) form the foundation of the outstanding research at UoC. All professors and tenured researchers are anchored in Faculties, while membership of KPAs or other structures is not fixed.
Emerging Groups: The Emerging Groups are important drivers of innovation at the University of Cologne. Their goal is to develop and establish new research fields and topics at the university. Funded within the framework of the Excellence Research Support Program (ERSP), they typically bring together 5–10 researchers with demonstrated success in third-party funding acquisition and high-quality publications. The launch of a large third-party funded project marks the transition of an Emerging Group into a stable research structure and may lead to the creation of new Key Profile Areas (KPAs).
Key Profile Areas (KPAs): KPAs are interdisciplinary collaborative research structures centered around overarching scientific themes and distinguished by exceptional international recognition. Five of the university’s nine KPAs—AGING, BEHAVIOR, PLANT, QUANTUM, and UNIVERSE — each host an Excellence Cluster (EXC).
