The University Award in the ‘Teaching & Learning’ category recognizes individuals whose thoughtfully implemented offerings or projects in this area serve as exemplary models for the university’s approach to teaching and learning. Consideration is given to those who have demonstrated innovation and exceptional commitment in the design and/or implementation of a teaching/learning offering or project, thereby making an outstanding contribution in this field.
At the University of Cologne, scholars and scientists shape teaching and learning to enable students to develop their talents, improve their collaborative skills, and acquire the abilities needed to help shape a changing society. In the following, we would like to introduce you to some of the outstanding faculty members at the University of Cologne who are pioneering innovative approaches in teaching.

Professor Dr Barbara Dauner-Lieb is a legal scholar who is shaping legal education through her innovative teaching methods and practical and socially relevant approaches, along with international and interdisciplinary networking. For her outstanding commitment, she was awarded the Landeslehrpreis NRW (NRW state teaching prize) in 2019, the 1st Class Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2021, and the Title of Honorary Senator by the University of Cologne in 2025. She is regarded throughout Germany as one of the most prominent pioneers of the modernization of legal education.

Professor Dr Benjamin Rott is shaping mathematics education at the University of Cologne through innovative teaching concepts, practical networking and interdisciplinary research projects. For his outstanding commitment to teaching, he was elected “Professor of the Year” in the Humanities/Social Sciences/Cultural Studies category by the UNICUM Foundation in 2021. He combines mathematical problem-solving, talent development and teaching expertise with socially relevant aspects, such as inclusive teaching.
The Erasmus+ Academy ‘Teacher Education for a Future in Flux’ (teff), led by the University of Cologne, is an alliance of ten European universities, schools, and educational institutions. It promotes excellent, future-focussed teaching by bringing together student teachers and active teaching staff in transnational, co-creative formats, such as makerspaces, urban laboratories and educathons. In doing so, it combines European perspectives on digitalization, sustainability, inclusion, and well-being with innovative educational processes for research and practice.
Today, digital and virtual teaching and learning are essential and necessary concepts for universities, shaping everyday university life and making teaching and studying more flexible.
In a digital showroom, we have compiled multimedia examples from areas in which digital teaching has been creatively implemented at the University of Cologne and new, innovative formats have been developed and trialled. The showroom is intended to inspire our faculty members and students to develop teaching at the University of Cologne in a forward-looking and co-creative way.
The ‘Innovation in Teaching’ funding line supports new ideas and teaching concepts at the University of Cologne that contribute to the improvement of teaching and study conditions.
