Structure & Governance
The structure and governance of the University of Cologne are designed to ensure sustainable and agile academic development and long-term strategic planning.
It is laid down in the Constitution of the University of Cologne (PDF, in German only) and reflects both the requirements of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (in German only) and institution-specific elements.
The university's key structural units are its six large Faculties, which, as academic centres, ensure the integration of research, teaching and transfer; the Key Profile Areas, which serve as interdisciplinary structures for outstanding collaborative research; and the centres and service facilities that support the university's various activities.
The central governing bodies of the university are the Rectorate, the Board of Trustees and the Senate. Their work is supported by a number of other committees, such as the Academic Advisory Board, which advises the Rectorate and the Faculties in all important academic issues.
