Key Profile Areas (KPAs)
Key Profile Areas (KPAs) are thematically defined research areas of high academic and/or societal relevance. They have substantial critical mass and are characterized by research at the highest international level. Research within the KPAs is transdisciplinary and integrated into networks that create synergies – both within the university and with non-university partners (such as Max Planck Institutes).
Key Profile Areas are established by the Rectorate on the basis of external expert opinions and the recommendation of the Academic Advisory Board. They are established for a period of seven years with the possibility of renewal. Existing Key Profile Areas are evaluated on a regular basis.
Governance of the Key Profile Areas
All Key Profile Areas (KPAs) at the University of Cologne operate under a set of statutes that ensures transparent and structured collaboration among all stakeholders.
The governance of the KPAs is anchored in a defined committee structure:
- Executive Board – The Executive Board is responsible for the operational management of the respective KPA, supports the spokesperson in their duties, and is responsible for implementing strategic goals, coordinating projects and resources, and communicating with the faculties and the rectorate.
- Supervisory Board – The Supervisory Board, which comprises the KPA spokesperson(s), the deans of the participating faculties, and the rector, has the task of overseeing and advising the Executive Board. In this capacity it decides on strategic fundamental decisions between the KPA, the involved faculties, and the rectorate, thereby playing a crucial role in the further development of the KPAs. This includes recommendations on strategic professorship planning and statements on structural development.
Through this clearly defined governance framework, the interaction of faculties, the rectorate, and the KPAs is ensured. The collaboration is not only formally regulated but also becomes visible in practice—for example, through joint appointment decisions—creating a transparent and cooperative working environment that effectively supports the strategic development of the KPAs.
