The VACCELERATE study "EU-COVAT-1 AGED" is investigating the effect of the COVID-19 booster vaccination in persons over 75 years of age.
The European vaccine research network VACCELERATE, coordinated by Prof Dr Oliver A. Cornely, investigated the immune response of a 3rd and 4th vaccination against COVID-19 in a multinational study.
EU-COVAT-1 AGED, the first of three VACCELERATE studies, started on 9 November 2021 and is a Phase II study conducted with approved mRNA vaccines in 322 participants over the age of 75 in a total of seven countries.

Due to adapted vaccine recommendations, the study schedule was adapted: From 15 February 2022, a second group of subjects was included to receive a 4th vaccination. After the vaccinations, antibodies were analysed at intervals of 14 days, three, six and twelve months to determine protection against SARS-CoV-2 and make recommendations how to apply booster vaccinations in the future.
