The University of Cologne’s renowned international law expert, Professor Claus Kreß, LL.M. (Cambridge), was appointed ad hoc judge to the International Court of Justice in the Hague. In this capacity, he will participate in the ‘Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Gambia v. Myanmar)’.
Gambia bases its proceedings on the Genocide Convention and claims that the state of Myanmar is responsible for Genocide perpetrated against the Rohingya population.
The International Court of Justice consists of 15 judges. If none of these judges is a national of the party in question, the latter may appoint an ad hoc judge who need not be a national of that party. Ad hoc judges participate in the decision on an equal footing with their colleagues.
On Tuesday, the oral hearing began in The Hague on the question of imposing precautionary measures. The website of the ICJ provides ongoing information on developments in the proceedings.
