Air pollutant prediction will be improved in cooperation with the German Weather Service (DWD) who intend to use the EURAD-CTM as part of ist air pollution forecasting system. The EURAD modeling system is used since November 2001 to perform a daily forecast of air pollutants. The concentration fields resulting from that forecast can be used for SENEVA as well as for other scientific projects, in particular within AFO2000.
Emission sensitivity/scenarios will be calculated on the basis of typical reference cases selected from a statistical analysis performed by the DWD based on daily forecasts of air pollution. Sensitivity studies with emphasis on changes in emissions will be performed to characterize the reference cases with respect to their different meteorological conditions and chemical regimes. The methods in the start-up phase of the project will be developed on the basis of well-known episodes where high-quality measured data from field-campaigns are available (e.g. BERLIOZ, LOOP or VOTALP).
Sensitivity studies will further be analysed by process analysis and budget calculations with the aim to quantifiy the chemical and dynamical processes which determine the changes in the concentration fields. The improved knowledge of the processes lead to a better insight into the reasons for the concentration patterns of air pollutants over Europe and the impact of changing emissions on future air quality.
Chemical transformations will be investigated in detail with respect to the chemical mechanisms currently used by EURAD (RADM2, RACM). The results of the chemical mechanism used within the 3D-EURAD-CTM modeling system will be compared with the results of the measurements obtained in the atmospheric simulation chamber SAPHIR (ICG2, Research Center Jülich). The measured data will be used to improve the chemical mechanism of the EURAD model in order to get an process-evaluated chemical mechanism.
The modeled data will be available in a data archive maintained by the German Weather Service. The data archive can be used for the development of abatement strategies to improve the air quality over Europe in particular in the context of EU directives.
First applications based on SENEVA and other projects of the RIU allow for a daily short-term forecast of air pollutants over Europe and Germany. In cooperation with the environmental agency of Northrhine Westphalia (LUA-NRW) the daily forecast has been extendend to the federal state of NRW (PROSYS). Long-term calculations for the year 1997 have been carried out with emphasis on NRW and in the context of the EU directives on air quality (ANABEL). The data from the daily forecast as well as from the long-term run can be further used for scientific work. Graphics of air pollutants generated from the results of the daily prediction of air pollutants can be accessed by internet for Europe as well as for the local scales (NRW).
