The University of Cologne and Dschang University (Cameroon) signed a cooperation agreement formalizing the exisiting collaboration between both universities. A delegation from the University of Cologne consisting of three scientists from the Faculty of Medicine and a representative of the International Office traveled to Cameroon from 26 September to 2 October. In consultations, workshops and visits to local facilities, both sides discussed possibilities to intensify and enhance the existing cooperation, particularly in regard to the joint founding of a Medical Faculty at Dschang University.
At the same time, the trip contributed to a strengthening of the academic and cultural exchange between Cameroon and Germany. It was fully financed by federal government funding through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Dschang University is a state university located in the city of Dschang in western Cameroon. It was founded in 1993 in the course of the country’s education reform. Today it has 35,000 students and 460 professors and lecturers in five faculties and two institutes.
The mission was initiated by the Cologne-based neurophysiologist Dr. Filomain Nguemo, who was born in the vicinity of Dschang and attended the university there. He attained his university and doctoral degree in biology from the University Yaoundé I. Today, Dr. Nguemo heads a research team at the University of Cologne in the working group of Professor Hescheler. He is also involved in several projects financed by the EU and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
