Aus der Perspektive der Praxis und nicht primär aus der Sicht der klassischen Wahrheitstheorien wollen wir auf der 45. Kölner Mediaevistentagung eine der großen philosophischen Fragen betrachten, die zugleich über die Philosophie hinaus alle Wissenschaften wie auch unseren Alltag prägen. Das gilt im übrigen auch für jenes Millennium, das wir Mittelalter nennen. Dieser Zugang mag ungewöhnlich erscheinen, denn im allgemeinen verbinden wir mit der Wahrheitsfrage hauptsächlich theoretische Fragen aus Epistemologie und Logik, Ontologie und Metaphysik, und übersehen dabei, dass diese untrennbar mit unterschiedlichen Formen von Praxis verknüpft sind: hierzu zählen intellektuelle Praktiken ebenso wie praktische Belange, Handlungen, Lebensformen, etc., ohne dass die praktische auf die theoretische Dimension reduziert werden kann.
At the 45th Cologne Mediaevistentagung, we want to look at one of the great philosophical questions from the perspective of practice and not primarily from the perspective of classical theories of truth, which at the same time characterise all sciences beyond philosophy as well as our everyday life. This also applies to the millennium that we call the ‘Middle Ages’. The approach may seem unusual, because we generally associate the question of truth mainly with theoretical questions of logic, epistemology and metaphysics, overlooking the fact that these are inextricably linked to various forms of practice: these include intellectual virtues and basic convictions (e.g. the assumption that truth and truthfulness are a good) as well as practical concerns, actions, habits (consuetudines) and ways of life, without reducing the practical dimension to the theoretical. By truth practices, we mean those practices that are intended to reveal, produce, determine and secure the truth. These include clarifying or complementary, affirmative or critical commentary on authoritative texts, legal practices such as the examination of witnesses according to codified procedural patterns, experimentation and (regulated) discourse, for example in a university disputation.
