On September 23, 2026, the panel “Trade and Just Sustainability Transitions between Global Dynamics and Local Contexts,” organized by the Sustainability Research Hub at the University of Cologne, will open the Fair Trade International Symposium (FTIS) 2026. The panel will focus on the impact of global trade dynamics on local sustainability transitions, as well as on how trade-related governance mechanisms can contribute to more socially just and environmentally sustainable development. Particular attention will be given to the dynamics between the Global North and the Global South.

During the panel, Peter Dannenberg, Marc-Oliver Bettzüge, and Gerda Kuiper will give impulse presentations on sustainable and resilient agri-food value chains, the potential of global carbon trading for climate justice, and the role of Fair Trade in improving labour and living conditions in the Global South. The event will be moderated by Tatiana López-Julies. The panel is open to all interested parties and will take place in the Conference Room in the Seminar building of the University of Cologne. It will begin at 5:30 p.m.

FTIS 2026 will take place from September 23 to 25 at the University of Cologne under the theme “Dynamics in an Unpredictable World.” The interdisciplinary symposium brings together scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and other stakeholders to discuss current developments in Fair Trade, international trade, and issues related to sustainable and equitable trade systems. Throughout the event, panels, workshops, keynotes, and open forums will provide opportunities for discussion and shared perspectives on future developments. Registration for the Symposium is subject to a fee.
