This event is part of the first European Doctoral Days. It will discuss the benefits of gaining experience as a doctoral candidate abroad and how to make the most of this opportunity.
Spending time conducting research abroad during your doctoral studies can be very enriching; it gives you the chance to think outside the box and gain new insights into your own field of research. In the long term, your independent profile as a researcher is usually strengthened by experiences gained in a new working environment. Many highly specialised research projects also benefit from an expansion of their network, including yours. On the other side you will also have the opportunity to improve your foreign language skills, experience global cultures and broaden your personal horizons. This way, you can acquire soft skills that will be important in the job market later on. Naturally, questions arise: how can I finance my stay? What will happen to my work contract, e.g. at the university? Is it possible to have a family-friendly stay abroad? Are there alternatives, such as a virtual exchange? Is all this sustainable? The lecture will provide an insight into the various structures and ways to organise a tailor-made stay abroad, including the support options that are available for planning, implementation, and financing, as well as the exciting experiences that may await you.
