Fields of action – Our transfer paths
The Faculties and central institutions of the University of Cologne contribute their expertise to the economy, politics and society in many ways. Their transfer activities can be categorized into four fields of action:
Communication - Sharing knowledge in an understandable way
The University of Cologne actively brings its research into the public sphere through exciting events, diverse media formats, and direct dialogue between experts and citizens. It supports its researchers in communicating their findings clearly and effectively, whether through the press, social media or cultural events in Cologne. In doing so, it makes knowledge visible and accessible to all.
Consulting - Competent advice
Researchers at the University of Cologne – particularly from the fields of economics, social sciences, and law – contribute their expertise to advisory processes. They support politics, business and society by making recommendations based on research findings.
Many researchers are members of expert committees at federal, state and international level, where they help shape legislation and inform political decision-making.
Application - Living innovation
At the University of Cologne, application means more than just patents and licences: researchers collaborate closely with industry and society to transform new insights into innovative products and services.
The Gateway Excellence Start-up Center supports start-ups through coaching, advice and co-working opportunities. Transfer scouts are mentors for promising projects and connect them with relevant partners.
At the Faculty of Medicine, research findings are translated directly into improved diagnostics and treatments thanks to close collaboration between the laboratories and the clinic.
Students gain hands-on experience through ‘Service Learning’ and engage in charitable projects, supported by the ProfessionalCenter and the University Network for Social Responsibility.
Further education - Lifelong learning
Management training for all career levels
The University of Cologne Business School brings together the university’s expertise in management and offers tailored further education programmes for professionals and managers at all levels, from entry level to senior management. With its international MBA programme and hands-on seminars, it supports individuals and companies in strengthening leadership skills and fostering innovation.
Networking and development in teacher training
The Center for Teacher Education (ZfL) is a central hub for the professional development of teachers in Cologne and beyond. It promotes collaboration between universities, schools and practice centres, creating ideal conditions for sustainable teacher training and continued professional growth.
Lifelong learning for all generations
The Coordinating Office for Science & the Public Sphere (KOOST) brings research and education to life for learners of all ages – through initiatives like KölnerKinderUniversität, KölnerJuniorUniversität and study opportunities for visiting students and senior citizens. In doing so, the university embeds science into society and fosters curiosity and ongoing education across generations.
Practical further education programmes for students and professionals
Certificate programmes and micro-credentials expand the university’s educational offers, providing students and external participants with opportunities to acquire new skills and advance their careers.
