Dr. Jens Hopperdietzel

Jens Hopperdietzel has been a temporary academic advisor in the Department of Linguistics at the Institute for German Language and Literature I of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Cologne since April 2023. He has represented the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in the Junior Faculty Club since April 2026.

He completed his doctorate in General Linguistics at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2020 with a thesis on the grammar of Oceanic languages. During his doctorate, he worked at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and at the Leibniz Center for General Linguistics. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher on an ERC-funded research project on semantic typology at the University of Manchester from 2020 to 2023.

His research combines linguistic typology and grammatical theory at the interface of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. His habilitation project focuses on the question of how different languages structure and express events. At the University of Cologne, he also heads a scientific network on applicative alternations in language comparison funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
