How can I implement generative AI in teaching and learning?

In the context of teaching and learning, the use of generative AI offers a range of possibilities, e.g. to reduce the workload of teachers and students, to increase accessibility, and to facilitate new and innovative didactic approaches and formats.

Exams are the main topic of conversation when it comes to legal issues. Like any other tool, the use of generative AI may be prohibited or permitted.

The following rules currently apply at the University of Cologne: Generative AI may not be used in examinations, e.g. for text production in a term paper or seminar paper, if such use violates the requirement of independent performance (see also the information page ‘ChatGPT und Prüfungen’ (only available in German) of the Legal Department). However, if AI skills are to be acquired and demonstrated, using such systems in examination contexts is essential.

On this page you will find basic information on the application of generative AI in learning and teaching, along with specific examples. The specific application possibilities depend on the examination regulations applicable to you. If you have any questions, please contact your examination office.

Guidelines for the use of generative AI in the context of teaching and learning

With regard to the role of generative AI in the context of teaching and learning, we are currently following two guidelines:

  1. AI-supported writing and associated (didactic) questions should be addressed, negotiated, and explored directly
  2. AI systems must be used in a fully transparent manner

Background information and more detailed explanations of the two guidelines can be found in the paper ‘Hinweise zu textgenerierenden KI-Systemen im Kontext von Lehre und Lernen’ (only available in German).

In addition, you can watch the recordings of the two introductory lectures from the Tags des Lernens und der Lehre – Arena: KI Lernen und Lehren (only available in German):

As part of the #TeachingTuesday series, the Center for Teacher Education (ZfL) developed the article ‘Was bleibt vom Hype? Dealing with AI in teaching and learning’, which covers technical background information and basic assumptions, as well as the opportunities, challenges, and implications for the teaching and learning culture.

Information by the Faculties and departments

If your Faculties and department have information on the application of generative AI in the context of teaching and learning, we would be happy to link it. Feel free to contact us!
