What do the German courses cost?

The preparatory German courses for refugees are funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Therefore, you do not have to pay a course fee. 

Do the courses take place in person or online?

There are in-person courses and online courses. Please be aware that the in-person courses have a limited capacity. 

Which language test will be undertaken at the end of the Preparatory German Course for refugees?

You will take the DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang).

My last language course was a long time ago, but I learned a lot more German in the meantime. At which course level do I start??

At the beginning of the Preparatory German courses, we will check your German level with a placement test. On the basis of the results, you will be assigned to a course.

Does the Preparatory Course take place in the morning or afternoon?

Usually, the courses take place in the morning. However, there are also sometimes classes in the afternoon.

How long does a Preparatory German Course for refugees last?

The duration of the course depends on the results of the placement test. If you start with B2 level, it will take ca. one year until you take the DSH exam.

Am I registered as an enrolled student at the University of Cologne while I am a participant of the German Course?

No, you are not enrolled as a student at the University of Cologne.

Application

Can I apply when I do not live in Germany yet?

No, for a successful application, you need to live in Germany and hold one of the accepted residencce permits. You can find an overview here. Please be aware: When you came to Germany via a family reunification, please also upload the residence permit of the principal person entitled ("Stammberechtigter", f. ex. your wife or husband). 

Which language level do I need to enter the Preparatory German Course for Refugees?

At the time of application, you must have at least a level B1 certificate.
We then offer German courses from B2 to C1.

What is a Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB, University Entrance Qualification)?

A University Entrance Qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB) is required to apply for studying at our university. Usually you will have this if you were allowed to study in your home country.

How can I check if I have a University Entrance Qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB)?

You can use the database of the DAAD or anabin to check if you have a University Entrance Qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB).

Where can I find general information about studying at University of Cologne?

What is the language level which is required to apply for studying at the University of Cologne?

You need one of the following certificates: 

  • DSH2 („Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang“ in German, German language exam for a University Entrance Qualification), or better DSH3
  • TestDaF with TDN4 in all four parts of examination
  • C1 certificate of the „Goethe Institut“
  • „Deutsches Sprachdiplom DSD Stufe II“ of the "Kultusminister Konferenz" (KMK, Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs)
  • „Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule“ or „Telc Deutsch C-2“
