On 13 May, we will be celebrating the first European Doctoral Day across Europe – a day dedicated to doctoral studies.

The University of Cologne is also joining this special occasion, recognising the achievements, commitment and importance of its doctoral candidates.

Through their research, doctoral candidates are shaping the future: they are advancing scientific knowledge, developing innovative solutions and making an important contribution to how our society meets the challenges of a rapidly changing world. Doctoral candidates are key drivers of scientific, economic, industrial and technological development in Europe.

The European Doctoral Day aims to:

  • inspire and encourage people to pursue a doctorate
  • increase the visibility and recognition of doctoral achievements
  • highlight the diversity of career paths and the social contribution of doctoral students

The European Doctoral Day offers you the opportunity to participate in a wide range of events at the participating universities. It's worth taking a look at the programme!

The European Doctoral Day 2026 at the University of Cologne

During this event at the University of Cologne, we will focus specifically on the advantages of spending time abroad for your academic career.

Please note that this event will take place on May 19!

European Doctoral Day 2026 - How to Realize a Research Stay Abroad

The event will discuss the benefits of gaining experience as a doctoral candidate abroad and how to make the most of this opportunity.
Spending time conducting research abroad during your doctoral studies can be very enriching; it gives you the chance to think outside the box and gain new insights into your own field of research. In the long term, your independent profile as a researcher is usually strengthened by experiences gained in a new working environment. Many highly specialised research projects also benefit from an expansion of their network, including yours. On the other side you will also have the opportunity to improve your foreign language skills, experience global cultures and broaden your personal horizons. This way, you can acquire soft skills that will be important in the job market later on. Naturally, questions arise: how can I finance my stay? What will happen to my work contract, e.g. at the university? Is it possible to have a family-friendly stay abroad? Are there alternatives, such as a virtual exchange? Is all this sustainable? The lecture will provide an insight into the various structures and ways to organise a tailor-made stay abroad, including the support options that are available for planning, implementation, and financing, as well as the exciting experiences that may await you.
